Disney Dreamlight Valley is a farming simulation game, so of course it involves using different tools to harvest materials. You’ll have your royal tools from the start of the game, but you’ll need to upgrade them as you progress through the game, allowing you to break through barriers within biomes and harvest all available materials. This guide will show you how to fully update each of the Royal Tools: The shovel, the pickaxe and the watering can.

How to upgrade the royal shovel
When you first get the Royal Shovel you can dig holes, and that’s about it. There are three available upgrades for the Royal Shovel, here’s how to complete them.

Stump Shovel Upgrade:
- Unlock the Forest of Valor for 3000 Dreamlight.
- Unlock Anna for 4,000 Dreamlight from the Frozen Realm Castle door.
- You need to get Anna to Friendship Level 2 to unlock her Frozen Invitation quest and collect the following materials:
- 10 softwood
- Available throughout the valley.
- 4 hardwood
- Obtainable in the Forest of Valor.
- 4 iron ingots
- Crafted from 5 Iron Ores and 1 Coal.
- 3 craft parts
- 1 crafting parts requires 2 iron ore.
- 10 softwood
Apply the enchantment to upgrade your shovel. You can now remove and harvest hardwood from stumps of any size.

First Gnu Bone Shovel Upgrade:
- Unlock the Sunlit Plateau for 7,000 Dreamlight.
- Unlock Scar.
Complete the “Nature and Care” quest and the “Friends Are Not Food” quest. - Obtain the quest “Breaking Bones” from Scar and collect the following materials:
- 5 lion claws
- Dig them up near the cliffs of the sunlit plateau.
- 5 Dry wood
- Sought in the sunlit plateau.
- 5 iron ingots
- Crafted from 5 Iron Ores and 1 Coal.
- 5 lion claws
Craft the Lion Claw Shovelhead and apply it from your inventory. You can now remove Small Wildebeest Bones in the Sunlit Plateau.
Second Wildebeest Bones Shovel Upgrade:
- Reach level 7 friendship with Scar and complete all previous quests.
- Start the quest “The Circle of Life” and collect the following materials:
- old bones
- Gathered in the mines of the Sunlit Plateau.
- 10 Purified Nightshards
- 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard.
- old bones
- Turn the collected items to ash in Scar’s volcanic geyser.
- Plant and water the ashes until ready and harvest the Flower of Bones.
Craft and use the Roaring Shovelhead from your inventory. You can remove wildebeest bones of any size and remove the large wildebeest bones blocking the bridge in the sunlit plateau.
How to upgrade the royal pickaxe
When you first get the Royal Pickaxe, you can harvest ore and gems from mining nodes throughout the valley. There are four Royal Pickaxe upgrades available, here’s how to complete them.

First Sea Debris Pickaxe Upgrade:
- Unlock Moana Realm for 3,000 Dreamlight.
- Complete Moiana’s quest line to bring her to the valley.
Maui will upgrade your pickaxe during Moana’s first questline. You can now remove and harvest sand from the sea debris.
Second Sea Debris Pickaxe Upgrade:
- Reach level 4 friendship with Maui and complete all previous quests.
- Start the A Tale of Stone and Fire quest with Maui and collect the following materials:
- scraping stones
- Make any five star meal
- Find recipes in your menu collection
Once you give these items to Maui, he will upgrade your royal pickaxe again. You can now clear the large sea debris blocking the bridge at Dazzle Beach.

First Ice Shard Pickaxe Upgrade:
- Unlock the Frozen Realm for 3,000 Dreamlight.
- Bring Elsa and Anna to the valley.
- Start Elsa’s Breaking the Ice Quest and collect the following materials:
- 5 sunflowers
- Collected by Dazzle Beach.
- Vial with ocean water
- Collected from Dazzle Beach Dock Shoreline.
- 5 lemons
- Harvested from trees in the Forest of Valor and Glade of Faith.
- 2 cane
- Purchased from Goofy’s Dazzle Beach Stand.
- 3 garlic
- Harvested from the Forest of Valor.
- 5 sunflowers
Craft and apply the Warmth of Summer enchantment from your inventory. You can now remove and harvest snow from the small ice shards.
Second Ice Shard Pickaxe Upgrade:
- Complete Elsa’s What Home Feels Like quest to unlock The Singing Ice quest.
- Gather the following materials for the Singing Ice quest:
- Make a bouquet for Elsa:
- White Daisy
- Wanted in the peaceful meadow
- Red falling Penstemon
- Pink bromeliad
- Sought in the sunlit plateau
- White Daisy
- 5 chunks of ice
- vial of ice cold water
- Collected from the river in Frosted Heights
- 3 snow
- Harvested from small ice shards
- Make a bouquet for Elsa:
Make the potion and give it to Elsa, she will upgrade your pickaxe. You can now remove the large shards of ice blocking the bridge in Frosted Heights.
How to upgrade the royal watering can
When you get the royal watering can for the first time, you can water your crops. There are currently two Royal Watering Can upgrades available that will come in handy in the Glade of Trust. Here’s how to unlock them.

Upgrade the first mushroom watering can:
- Unlock the Glade of Trust for 5,000 Dreamlight.
- Reach level 8 of friendship with Merlin and complete all previous friendship quests.
- Start the Dark Experiment quest and collect the following materials:
- 20 mushrooms
- Harvested from the Glade of Trust
- 5 emeralds
- Mined from nodes in Forest of Valor and Glade of Faith
- 3 Purified Night Shard
- 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard
- 20 mushrooms
Return to Merlin with the materials and he will upgrade your royal watering can. You can now remove small purple mushrooms that drop edible mushrooms.
Second Mushroom Upgrade:
- Reach friendship level 10 with Merlin and complete all previous friendship quests.
- Start Merlin’s final trial quest and collect the following materials:
- 5 Purified Nightshards
- 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard
- 25 mushrooms
- Harvested from the Glade of Trust
- falling water
- Gathered from the southern waterfall in the Glade of Trust
- ice heart
- Ice Heart Seed obtained from Merlin, plant and water it, it will be ready to harvest in a few moments.
- 5 Purified Nightshards
Make the potion and apply it to your Royal Watering Can. You can now remove purple mushrooms of any size and eliminate the large mushrooms blocking the bridge in the Glade of Trust.
