The Mothman is a legendary cryptid in the world of Fallout 76. Influenced by real-life legend, the Mothman appears through Appalachia at night. If you’re looking for it, here’s what we know about where it can appear and what its weaknesses are.
Cult of the Mothman
Before the war, there were rumors of a large moth/human hybrid in the West Virginia wilderness. Word spread, and soon there was a small following of the mysterious creature. Although the sighting has not been scientifically studied, there has been enough interest to establish a museum of the Mothman in Point Pleasant.
Originally believed to be a myth, pre-war documents and relics have gained popularity among fanatics and cultists, leading to the formation of the cult of the Mothman. Since its inception there have been two main sects that split off from the original cult. Followers of the winged worship the red-eyed mothman, while the enlightened worship the purple-eyed wise mothman.

Mothman weaknesses
If you encounter a normal Mothman, it’s possible that it will just disappear in a puff of black smoke (just like the smiling man). The Stalking, Vengeful, and Scorched variants are aggressive and will attack you.
Mothman attacks with sound waves emanating from their wings, or with sounds. They will also fly high in the sky or disappear only to reappear in a different location to confuse you.
Sneaking up and attacking with stealth bonuses is a good way to gain an advantage. However, if you sneak during combat, Mothman can simply despawn.
