How to Fish Like a Dragon: Ishin!
You can fish once you get to Chapter 2 and exit Teradaya, the inn where Ryoma is staying. You can fish right away, but you need to make it to Chapter 3 to access the Koma River locations.
In Like a Dragon: Ishin! there are four fishing spots:
- The Uji River in Fushimi (South of Teraday)
- The Kamo River in Mukurogai
- The Fish Banks
- The east coast
The Fishing Banks and East Coast are sea fishing spots and provide access to different fish than the rivers. For sea fishing, chat to the man in the straw hat standing in front of a boat just down the stairs south of Teradaya.
How to get bait
However, before you head out to your new favorite fishing spot, you probably want to grab some bait. You can catch fish without him, but the best fish are easier to catch when you have something to lure them in, and many of them only appear when you have bait.
Bait can be bought at several places. The first is the Ichikura General Store. The Growing General Store only sells two very basic types of lures:
- Bait (500 mon)
- Quality Bait (1,000 Mon)
These are your starter baits. They won’t snag you the big fish, but they’re fine if you’re after small fry.
Bigger fish need better quality baits. To do this, you need to go to one of two locations. The first is a baitmonger. bait dealer tend to roam around in Rakunai on the eastern part of Shijo Street and you won’t be able to access them until Chapter 3.
Bait Vendors sell the following:
- Bait (500 mon)
- Quality Bait (1,000 Mon)
- Special Bait (2,000 mon)
- Prime Bait (5,000 Mon)
If you’re looking for specialty or premium baits and don’t feel like hunting down a bait dealer, you can also head to the Ebisu Pawn Shop in Rakunai, which sells specialty baits and premium baits for the same price as a bait dealer.

How to use bait
Once you’ve got bait and you’re in your favorite spot, it’s time to go fishing. The first thing to do is use your bait.
Once you are at the fishing spot you will see a small menu in the lower right corner of your screen. Press the button next to Bait, then select Scatter Bait. From there you can select the bait you want.
You can catch multiple fish with the same bait, but it only takes a short amount of time, so scatter wisely.
How to use your fishing rod in Like a Dragon: Ishin!
Okay, so you’ve picked a spot and scattered your bait. The only thing left is fish. One of the first things you’ll notice about any fishing spot is a dotted red line across the top of your screen. This shows how far you can throw. The better your rod, the further you can cast.
You will also notice different, differently shaped shadows in the water. Each shadow represents a different species of fish. Here is a quick overview:
- Fish Shaped Shadows indicate fish. The bigger the shadow, the bigger the fish. Keep an eye on the shape of the shadow as this can give you a clue as to what type of fish it is. There are two types: round-headed fish and triangular-headed fish.
- Blob shadows can represent many things: squid, squid, shrimp, crawfish, turtles and even a few species of fish. Again, the bigger the shadow, the bigger the fish.
- long shadows represent things like eels, gobies and oarfish. As usual, a larger shadow indicates a larger fish.
Once you have a target, throw your line with the action button. You should aim right in front of the shadow you want to catch. Once you have a fish’s attention, they’ll swim to your float (the thing at the end of your line that’s bobbing up and down in the water) and blush.
Once they do, watch your swimmer. You’ll notice a red line near the top edge. Wait until that red line is underwater before attempting to reel in the fish. Your controller will also vibrate. If this happens, press the action button again to hook your fish. They pull them in automatically, no further work is required.
How to update your rod
You’ll start out with an Easy Starter rod and while you can catch some fish with it, you might want to switch to a better one. To do this, you need to earn Virtue (you only get this by playing the game) and then visit a shrine.
You can buy better rods with the virtue you’ve earned, but there’s a catch. You must purchase the other rods in order, there is no skipping to the best.
Here is a short list of the staves, as well as how much Virtue each costs:
- Simple starter (That’s the one you start with)
- River Classic (400 Virtue)
- sea classic (400 Virtue)
- rivermaster (1,500 Virtue)
- seamaster (1,500 Virtue)
- Peerless pole (4,000 Virtue)
Once you have a new rod, you can switch to it by going to your favorite fishing spot and selecting tackle.
