World of Warcraft is one of the most popular and important MMOs of all time. Nearly 20 years old, Blizzard’s genre-defining MMO has amassed millions of players and nine expansions. With the recent release of dragonflight, You might want to jump in and try the game, or come back after a while. But you’ll probably want to try the game before committing to it, so you might be wondering: Is World of Warcraft free?

The answer to whether or not World of Warcraft is free is… sort of.
You can download World of Warcraft, create an account, create a character and play to level 20 for the low, low price of $0. Playing through level 20 is completely free.
However, once you reach level 20, you will have to pay for a subscription that will set you back about $15 per month. You can save some money by signing up for longer periods, but you still have to pay to play Wow.
A subscription gives you access to everything up to dragonflight, but if you want to play the latest expansion, you’ll have to buy it too. The base expansion costs around $50, but it regularly sells for less than what’s on offer, and there are pricier editions if you fancy it.
