Completion of all sub-stories in Like a dragon: Goods! not only takes the time to finish them off, it can also take a bit of time to hunt them down. In this guide, we’ll go through all of the sub-stories that start in chapters 5 to 7. However, you don’t have to complete them in a set time. These can even be completed by the end of the game.

8. The involuntary courier
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: Shijo Bridge in Rakunai.
How to complete: Whichever option you choose, the courier will meet you head on and claim he sprained his ankle. Help him by delivering his last six letters.
Reward: Gold seal, 300 virtue
9. Enter the Black Panther couriers
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: Same location as Substory 8
How to complete: Beat Hoshi in a race to deliver 10 letters. Quite easy.
Reward: 300 virtue
10. The Panther’s Leading Man
Available in: Chapter 5, after completing Substory 9
Location: Outside the gate at the north end of Teramachi St, Rakunai
How to complete: Deliver 12 letters before Mikano to win. But there’s still a race to go.
Reward: 340 virtue
12. The hungry sumo wrestler
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: Rakunai, on South Teramachi Street, southeast of Don Quixote
How to complete: You can find the sumo wrestler at the intersection of Shinmeicho and South Teramachi Streets. Give him some spare food to help him out.
Reward: Join the hungry sumo wrestler, 150 virtue
19. Paladin Paladin
Available in: Chapter 6
Location: Umekojicho, Rakugei, just before South Umekojicho.
How to complete: A noble lady being harassed by a samurai needs help escorting her palanquin. Escort them while protecting the palanquin, then defeat the pesky samurai in the final battle.
Reward: Crimson Pearl, 350 Virtue
20. May I quote you on this?
Available in: Chapter 7
Location: Northeast Umekojicho, on the way to Shinmeicho
How to complete: Save this reporter from the ronin that’s chasing him. He will ask for an interview at the barracks. Meet him just to the right of the Shinsengumi HQ entrance and agree to the interview. Give the following answers to his questions:
- “It is my duty, nothing more.”
- “Go home and be a family man.”
- “Sharp and competent.”
- “It is a path to true strength.”
- “Keep your innocence.”
Reward: Eye of the Dragon, 300 Virtue
23. Bluffing the wrong lane
Available in: Chapter 6
Location: In front of the gambling den in Sannocho, Rakunai
How to complete: A player is being harassed. Mount up to defend him and Okita will join you. You don’t have to fight, but you will advance the substory. Return to this spot later and talk to the player, then go to Mukurogui. Talk to the person next to the Mukurogai entrance in Mukurogai. Win the following fight (and watch a very entertaining cutscene) to complete the side story.
Reward: 350 virtue
24. The Panthers’ playmaker
Available in: Chapter 5, after completing Substory 10
Location: Triggered by walking to the mansion Ryoma shares with Haruka in Another Life.
How to complete: You will receive a letter with a challenge from Inamoto. Go to the lower bridge in Rakugai in Sannocho. Defeat Inamoto by delivering 12 letters faster than him.
Reward: 360 virtue
26. The battered defender
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: South Umekojicho just before you reach Fushimi
How to complete: Talk to the suspicious looking man. If he gets beat up trying to defend a queen, offer him some medicine.
Reward: Bond with downed defender, 150 Virtue
31. Incarnate Thug
Available in: Chapter 6, complete Substory 30
Location: Mukurogai First Floor, west of Paradise, same location as 30
How to complete: The bat demands gratification again. Give it to him.
Reward: 350 virtue
33. The Ghost of the Fallen Warrior/Night of the Living Rumor
Accessible: Chapter 7
Location: East Mukurogai, on the banks of the Kamo River
How to complete: You will hear two guys talking about a fallen warrior that haunts swordsmen at night. Return at night to find your way around.
Reward: Nishikigoi Amulet, 350 Virtue
42. Invasion of the Black Ships?
Available in: Chapter 7
Location: The docks at South Sushimi Ichibangai Fushimi; You will hear two men talking about black ships.
How to complete: Talk to the people around you to help our seasick alien. One of the guys standing behind you will suggest sake. Try it. Unsurprisingly, that doesn’t work. The woman on the left side of the road, just north of our seasick friend, will suggest breaking a sweat… by fighting. Try it. That doesn’t work, surprising anyone, either. Head towards Teradaya in Shinmachi to find an elderly man watching all of this from afar. He suggests Umeboshi. Buy some from the Ichikura General Store. This works, but be ready for a fight afterwards.
Reward: Precise machines, 350 virtue
48. The way of the Sammerai
Available in: Chapter 6, daytime.
Location: The north corner in front of the Sengoku residence. Look out for the foreigner wearing an American flag kimono surrounded by some children.
How to complete: Agree to train Tom, a well-meaning American who wants to become a “sammerai”. Later, return to the dojo once the substory map icon appears next to the dojo. Fight him again and then kill some time until he returns to the dojo (look for the substory map icon). Return to the dojo and fight him again. After that, go to the south end of Fushimi Ichibangai where you will see a cutscene with Tom, some kids and several very hostile samurai. Complete this final encounter to complete the substory.
Reward: 400 Virtue, Tom’s Epic Trooper Card next time you go to Shinsengumi HQ
49. Last Stand of the Panthers
Available in: Chapter 5, after completing Substory 24
Location: Outside Teradaya; Look for a courier speaking to two women.
How to complete: Beat Takeda by 12 deliveries to win. This is the most difficult, so use your map to plan your route. If you’re lucky, he might get stuck running in circles (he did for me).
Reward: Large snake skin, 400 virtue
60. It is what’s inside
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: Western Mibu; Pass the Otake Tea Room
How to complete: The substory is triggered after you hear a woman scream. Talk to the samurai who will save her afterwards. When you’re done, go to the river bank between the two bridges in Rakunai. You will receive a call request. Select “Trust in Suzu”. Finally, return to the shrine in western Mibu, ready to drop.
Reward: Gion Hood, 400 virtue
63. The Boy Who Cried Bear
Available in: Chapter 5, complete “It’s What’s Inside”
Location: Western Mibu, near the shrine
How to complete: Listen to the boy’s story and fight the bear. Yes, it’s a real bear. He’s pretty tough, so get ready.
Reward: Inviting Hat, 350 Virtue
70. The Captain and the Curious
Available in: Chapter 5
Location: Fushimi, Ichibangai; the unnamed izakaya north of Umai Udon.
How to complete: Drink with Satow, a foreigner with deep respect for Japan. After a while, you’ll end up in Rakugai. A fight breaks out. win it
After this side story, you’ll notice a new collectible scattered around the map: Memoirs. Like prize winners, they appear as glowing objects on the floor. There are 26 of them in total, and you must collect them to complete all of the side stories, so keep an eye out for them as you wander Kyo.
Reward: 300 virtue, access to memoirs
