The long awaited sons of the forest has finally entered early access on Steam and is already off to an incredible start. As reported by SteamDB and Steam Charts, the game has peaked at 411,804 players less than 48 hours after release and is currently in the top 5 most played games on Steam.
That is significantly more than the all-time peak of the predecessor, The forestwho always made it hit about 76K. It’s also more than double the comparable game raftwhich was included in version 1.0 last year and rocketed up the charts about 100,000 concurrent players.
Hello everybody,
Sons Of The Forest is now available in Early Access on Steam!— Endnight Games (@EndNightGame) February 23, 2023
What does that mean for sons of the forest? Well, apart from a surge of interest and the sheer volume of players actually crashing steamit stands to reason that developer Endnight Games has a certified hit in hand. The forest became one of the most talked about survival titles of 2014, but since then a plethora of other games have risen and stolen its crown. That was entirely possible sons of the forest would be nonsense.
The larger player base could also be due to how much more ubiquitous streaming is in modern times. The forest was launched at a time when Twitch was still relatively niche, although both the then-latest consoles from Sony and Microsoft supported out-of-the-box Twitch functionality. Almost a decade later, we’ve seen the rise of influencers and esports teams, and even the creation and dissolution of competing platforms (RIP mixer).

At the time of writing, sons of the forest Is rocking 589,000 viewers on Twitch. That currently makes it the number one most watched thing on the platform, beating the nebulous “chat only” category and juggernauts like Appreciation, Fourteen daysAnd League of Legends. That’s kind of ridiculous for a game most people have probably never heard of.
While the game is unlikely to topple giants like Counter Strike Global Offensive, DOTA 2or PUBG On Steam, when it comes to top records, the fact of the matter is that it keeps pushing these games Steam player charts is really impressive. Whether or not this popularity can be sustained is the real question, though sons of the forest surely comes blazing from all arms.
