Temtem Review: A Challenging Twist on Monster Catching RPGs

Kid encounters monsters, leaves the city for an adventure and saves the world in his free time. The formula is one that we’ve seen numerous times since Game Freak first released Pokemon in the world, and during temtem may be sticking a bit too closely to this core concept, but beneath those similarities lies clever and rewarding RPG.

temtem begins with a note familiar to most Pokemon-even. You, a young critter enthusiast, wake up on a momentous day. The moment you meet your first Temtem is finally here, so set off to impose yourself on the local professor, another academic expert settling in a hillbilly village.

The story develops as expected. A nefarious band of good-for-nothings who see Temtem as a tool are fomenting some mischief that only you can stop, and your ultimate goal is to defeat the region’s top trainers—er, tamers—and claim the title of champion own.

temtem carries his Pokemon Inspirations a little too proud in that regard. The legendary Game Freak franchise popularized the genre, so the appeal of adopting this model is pretty obvious, even if it misses the opportunity to create something more interesting. As for the mechanics temtem differs from other critter catchers in surprising ways once your journey begins. Unlike most monster scavengers, temtem features a robust player vs. player scene and intense competitive battles that make the most of the deep combat system. You can try to climb the ranks from the start, but the real challenge comes from the endgame. Taking on the most powerful tamers means digging in temtem‘S impressive breeding systemto make the most of your creatures’ attributes, movement pools, and team pairings.

temtem can play very much Pokemon on the surface, but a number of tweaks to the combat system, an exciting visual design, and a strong emphasis on PvP more than make up for the similarities to him and other monster scavengers. While a deeper story would certainly be welcome, temtem is a unique and rewarding experience for those with the patience to master its intricacies.
