How nioh, Where to go is a level-based game divided into battlefields. You will encounter Zhang Liang at the end of the first battlefield in Part 1.
This boss is tricky for several reasons, namely because he’s fast, ferocious, and nimble. His attacks require you to master parry timing early on. Oh, and it has two phases.
Understand the Spirit Gauge
At the start, look at Zhang Liang’s health bar, and then look at the bar below. This is the boss Spirit Gaugeand similar to the posture bar in Axe, it goes back and forth, conveying the flow of power in combat.
A lot of boss fights, including this first one, are all about that Fill the boss’ Spirit Gauge to stun him. Successful deflections and ghost attacks (Y/Triangle) can shorten their bar and stun them faster.
Tips to overcome Zhang Liang Phase 1
This first boss fight is all about Deflecting Zhang Liang’s critical hits (attacks that glow red). By pressing the B/O button Once an enemy attacks, you can parry their blows.
Zhang Liang’s attacks come fast and hard, with the parry window starting a little earlier than you might think. If you don’t feel like you can deflect every incoming attack while learning the system, press LB/L1 to block his incoming regular attacks.
The best way to dodge Zhang Liang’s attacks is to be aggressive. We recommend using a Spear or javelin type weapon and spam him with a standard four hit combo (X/Square). The last hit of this combo will stagger the General of Man, allowing you to start the combo again.
You can mostly rinse this and repeat this for the whole phase; Just watch out for Zhang Liang’s critical hits and attacks from above. This will help you save health bottles.

In the first part of The General of Man’s second phase, the health bottles you saved by cheesemaking the first phase come in handy.
Zhang Liang will now hit you with prolonged attacks, both from his huge arms and by sending you a rock spike. Spamming him is difficult. Instead, you play more defensively this round.
The good news is that like in Stage 1, after you successfully parry a critical hit, Zhang Liang will stagger and give you a few seconds to hit it. Blocking a critical hit and then moving on with a regular four attack combo remains an important part of this fight, though follow up with A ghost attack should be enough to bring down Zhang Liang in one cycle.
You can take out a good chunk of his health from here. You shouldn’t have to do this more than twice to get him below half his health in the second phase.
Once Zhang Liang falls below a certain level of health, the blindfolded boy will tell you that it’s time to unleash the power of the Jade Emblem he gave you. To do this, press ( Y + B / Triangle + O), which triggers a cutscene that wins the battle instantly.
